Casey Mecija at the Tranzac
I made my way over to the Tranzac last Friday to catch my friend Stuart’s monthly “Out of this Spark presents” concert. Stu’s been doing these shows for a while now and I’ve yet to miss one. They’re always nice, laid-back affairs, where you’re sure to see unique sets from both fresh talent and more established acts. The lineup for the night was The Youngest, whose short, wistful set left me truly impressed, VIVIV, the latest project from Ken Reaume, and finally, Casey Mecija of Ohbijou. I’ll be honest, it was pretty late by the time Casey went on and I’d had a few drinks, so I collapsed into a seat right up front and tried filming to the best of my inebriated abilities. So please, watch this video of Casey playing a song that I’d never heard before – her sister Jenny is singing backups and really nails it. Love ‘em.

Here’s another video from last week’s Friends in Bellwoods 2 release show. It’s everyone singing Sarah’s song from the compilation. If you wait until after the credits, you’ll be treated to a special moment involving a pantsless Tim Fagan. Well worth watching.

I think the only way to properly follow-up a video of Ohbijou is with another video of Ohbijou. It’s been ten days and really, this is all I have! That’s alright though, ’cause this video features a special guest in the shape of John O’Regan, singer of The D’Urbervilles and Pitchfork’s #1 crush. He’s no stranger to this blog either, in fact, he was in the three posts prior to the last one! I really need to befriend some new bands or something.
Ohbijou at Soundscapes
Ohbijou just put out Beacons*, and they played Soundscapes to celebrate because they are our friends and where else would they play?
*What is going on this year? It’s like everyone I know is getting signed to record labels and releasing amazing new albums out and touring all the time and getting popular.
Casey Mecija feat. Evening Hymns at Whippersnapper Gallery
Yesterday, after I “launched” my new website, I realized that I didn’t have anything new to post. Thankfully I uncovered this gem that I shot last month during NXNE. I wasn’t able to take in too many shows that week due to my work schedule, but Casey and Jonas we’re playing right across the street at Whippersnapper so I ducked out and caught a few tunes, including this one – a boisterous take of the track “Thunderlove” from Ohbijou’s new album Beacons. It was a lot of fun seeing them play together, they should do it more often. Evening Hymns have an album called Spirit Guides pretty much in the can, so hopefully we’ll have it in our hands by the end of the year. I’ve heard a bit of it, sounds pretty epic.
